Brainstorming card ideas

I created this mindmap of different card ideas that I could use to create a card.

Font type experiemnts

The task that was given to me was to experiment with different typefaces in Adobe Illustrator.

I created these 6 different typefaces using different techniques such as placing a circle in front of some text, then using pathfinder, exclude, and from that I created a unique typeface.

If I were to choose my favorite one from each of these, it would certainly would be the middle left typeface, I like the rounded edges that it has along with the pastel red inside of it, although, the bottom left one is also really enticing to me with how ill proportionate and scrambled it is.

I had enjoyed my time creating these different typefaces and if I were to do something similar to this I would use these sort of techniques again, and try to further improve them if possible.

History of cards

From when they were first introduced, the tradition of sending greetings can be traced as far back as the early Egyptians who used papyrus scrolls to send letters and to the Ancient Chinese who exchanged messages of goodwill at New Year's. Since then many cultures have exchanged greetings cards in one form or another.

The rise in popularity of greeting cards was due to various factors. Advances in printing and mechanization meant that cards could be created far cheaper and with less effort than intricate handmade cards.
The "Penny Black" was the World's first postage stamp. When this was originally produced in 1840, removing the need for hand delivery, the greetings card was set to gain mass popularity.

Since 1860, companies have been mass-producing greeting cards and with further technical developments in printing increasing the availability and lowering the price, they became readily available to all. The introduction of colour printing in the 1930s and humorous cards (sometimes known as Studio cards) in the 1940s and 50s saw their popularity grow even further.

Today, greeting cards are used the world over for every conceivable occasion. The industry is worth an estimated $ 7.5 billion worldwide and the average person sends an amazing 55 cards a year.

I further expanded my ideas and jotted down a design layout, font types, and colour scheme to use in the card that I will make.

Final Card Design - Double Page Spread

Evaluation:

For my greeting card project, I was tasked with creating my own custom greeting card with a deadline of 1 week. I used skills that I had learned prior in other projects that I had done. An example is a movie poster design I did last year using the same style I did this year.

Out of all the research I completed, the part I found useful was creating mood boards to get a scope and an idea of the design I wanted to create and what kind of style I wanted to use.

I did mostly secondary research but I took photos of cards in real life in a nearby card store and used those for reference as well.

Looking at the final piece, I feel like I accomplished as much as I could in the time I had. I would have liked to do more, but something came up, so I wasn't able to.
Besides that, I really enjoy my final design and think it looks lovely and colourful. I enjoy the character I added holding a present and the two little ones hiding below, which gives depth to my holding onto the borders of the card.

I did want to create different kinds of abstract shapes and really fill in all the white space around the card but didn't know how to.
